Chapter 28: Free Land

The whole street was watching.

Deacon looked at the ring in his father's palm a long time.

Then he looked at me.

"You gave Sherry a promise," he said to his father. "Graylick stays untouched while she's your wife."

"I did."

"That ring is your word. It's what you swear on."

"It is."

"Then it goes where the word got kept." Deacon picked the ring up off his father's hand. "Not where it got lost."

He turned around.

He took my right hand, turned it palm up, and put the ring in it.

It was warm from Abner's hand and heavier than it looked.

I stared at it.

"I never touched your ring," I said.

It came out before I could stop it.

I'd said it to him at the Moon Supper, with forty wolves watching.

"I know," Deacon said. "Now you have."

Bowie, sitting on the church steps with his shirt off and a dish towel pressed to his side, started laughing so hard he had to lie down.

Abner looked at his son.

Then at me.

Then he nodded.

"Keep it, Miss Caskey," he said. "My word's yours."
