Chapter 5: Terms

Cedric's answer came at four in the morning.

The guard woke me with a knock.

"The Redhollow Alpha is at the stone," he said. "He's alone. He says he'll wait until you come or until he dies."

"Is he armed?"

"He's holding a piece of yellow paper."

I put on my boots and Ronan's coat and went down.

Ronan was already at the border with a lantern, leaning on the stone with his arms crossed.

On the far side of it, on Redhollow ground, Cedric stood in the road with the kitchen order in both hands.

He had not slept either.

"I signed this the week you told me," he said. "I remember it. I wrote it at my desk in my own hand."

"I know."

"Philippa told me the kitchen was handling your diet. She said Quince had cleared it. I never looked at the board."

"You never looked at me."

He flinched.

"Say the rest," he said. "Whatever it is. I'll stand here."

So I said it.

"At four months I fainted in the corridor outside your study."

He went very still.

"I hit the floor on my side. I lay there for a long time before I could crawl. The door was twenty feet from my head. I heard you in there on the phone."

"Flora."

"I called your name. You didn't come out. Holly found me, and Philippa came in behind her and said it was nerves. And you let that be the end of it."

"I never heard you."

"You never opened the door."

I watched his face.

The Alpha of Redhollow, who had never once raised his voice to me, put the paper down on the stone and put his hands over his eyes.
