Chapter 7: The Porch

By the fourth night Cedric had stopped going back to the border stone to sleep in his truck.

Ronan gave him a cot in the hunters' bunkhouse.

Cedric took it for one night, and then he started sitting on the step outside my window.

I saw him from my bed.

He sat with his elbows on his knees and a Stonecrest blanket over his shoulders, looking at nothing.

On the fifth night I came down in my coat and found Ronan leaning on the porch rail with two mugs of coffee.

"He's been out there since the lights went off," Ronan said.

"Is he hurting anybody?"

"He's hurting my reputation. My hunters think I've gone soft."

"You have."

"A little." He handed me a mug. "Decaf, before you ask."

I wrapped both hands around it.

Ronan watched the road for a while.

"Flora," he said. "If you ever wanted a different arrangement, my door is open. I'd feed you every day, and I wouldn't make you ask."

I looked at him.

He was a good man, and he was serious.

"Ronan," I said. "I'm carrying another man's children, I'm still mated to him, and I'm not shopping."

"Fair."

"And you only asked because he's sitting right there."

"A little bit of that too."

I laughed, and he did, and he lifted his mug to me and let it go.

"Can I tell you something about him, then?" he said.

"Go ahead."

"Eight years ago, when Cedric took Redhollow, he filled a doorway. I remember him at his first Moot. The Ashgrove Alpha reached for his hand and flinched."
