Chapter 23: First Frost
The first frost came nine days after the shutters went up, and the boy's crew spent the night covering tomatoes.
By two in the morning every row on the roof was under fleece, and the hoop house glowed under a dozen lamps.
Bai Jin counted nothing.
He walked down the service stairs with his hand in Gong Ting's.
They passed six hundred people asleep in the aisles and came to the old manager's flat.
It had a bed.
It had a real door, and a lock, and the first window in the building that had been washed.
The speaker had assigned it to them in front of the whole committee, and then said, "I have no opinion about it whatsoever."
Gong Ting shut the door.
He turned the key.
For a moment they stood in the dark and listened to the quiet.
"We have all night," said Bai Jin.
"We do."
"Nobody is going to ring a bell," said Bai Jin.
"If they do I'll shoot it."
Bai Jin laughed and pulled him down by the front of his jacket.
They kissed against the door, long and slow, in no hurry at all.
His fingers went to the buttons.
"I have a request," he said, into Gong Ting's mouth.
