Chapter 8: Five Million Dollars
Desmond Langston ate lunch on the fifty-second floor, at a table set for two.
He stood when I came in, and he pulled out my chair.
"Mrs. Stannard. I'm glad you came alone."
"I'm not alone," I said. "My phone is recording."
I put it on the white tablecloth between the bread and the butter.
He looked at it and smiled.
"Good. Then there's no confusion about what I offer."
A waiter set down a plate of sole I had no plan to eat.
"Your father and I built this company with our hands," Desmond said. "Frank was the better engineer. I was the better salesman. When he died, I took care of his daughter's affairs for twelve years, and I never took a dime."
"Forty percent isn't a dime."
"Forty percent is a number on a paper no one has touched," he said. "It pays nothing until you're thirty. It needs a husband's good judgment, and a family's, to be worth anything."
"Elias tells me it's mine on my birthday, without anyone's signature."
"Elias tells you many things."
He took a thin folder from the chair beside him and slid it across.
"Five million dollars," he said. "Wired this afternoon. A clean divorce, with a statement that you were misled. And one signature, here, on a form that waives your claim to the trust."
I read the first page.
I read it again.
The language was smooth and plain, and it said I agreed to leave the forty percent in the company's care "in perpetuity."
