Chapter 16: Forty Buttons

On Wednesday I took my mother's wedding dress out of its garment bag.

It had hung in the back of the closet in the room I no longer slept in, with the zipper shut, for eleven months.

I had not looked at it once.

I laid it across the bed now, and the lace was still white and the forty small buttons still ran down the back in their cloth loops.

Donal came to the doorway and stopped.

"You're going to wear that," he said.

"Saturday."

"To a funeral."

"To his funeral." I smoothed the lace. "He never saw me in it. He was supposed to see me in it at the end of the aisle, and he didn't, and I want him to."

He said nothing.

"Everyone in that church saw me in it except the one person it was for," I said. "I'm not wearing black to bury him. He'd hate it."

"He told me once he hated black ties."

"He would."

"He said they made him look like an undertaker's clerk." Donal's mouth moved. "I told him that was the job."

I laughed, and it hurt.

"I need to know it still fits," I said. "I can't reach the buttons."

"I'll do them."

"Forty of them."

"I counted them in the church," he said. "When you walked out."
