Chapter 18: Tell Them

Mina lowered her mic.

She stepped close to our mother, away from the speakers, and smiled the way she smiled at judges.

Everybody could still hear her.

The tent was that quiet.

"Umma. Not now. She's upset. She's been upset all weekend."

"I asked you a question."

"She was fifteen," Mina said. "She was confused. She still is. She paid a man to come to my wedding, and you're going to take her word over mine?"

My mother didn't answer.

She just held the microphone and waited.

My father had come around the main table.

He stopped at the edge of the dance floor.

"Mina," he said.

"Appa, I found it in my car." Mina's voice went up. "I told you. Under the seat. You were there when I told you."

"I was," my father said slowly.

"So why are we doing this? At my wedding?"

Nobody moved.

Then her husband stepped up beside her.

He was a tall, quiet man with very white teeth, and I'd heard him say maybe ten words all weekend.

He didn't take the microphone.
