Chapter 22: Tell T.

Alastair's POV

At one in the morning on Christmas Eve, I was on the kitchen floor with a wooden rocking horse in a great many pieces.

The instructions were in Swedish, and they had not helped.

I had run a company for eight years, and I could not find which end of the horse was the front.

"You're doing it backward," said Hazel from the doorway.

She wore a flannel robe and slippers shaped like sheep, and she held a peppermint in her cheek.

"I'm doing it in the order they gave me."

"They gave you a drawing of a goat."

"It's a horse."

"It's a goat. Hold the head up."

She sat down at the table with a groan and pointed at piece twenty-two, and in four minutes the horse had a body.

Neither of us said anything for a while.

The house ticked around us.

Upstairs, Emmeline's daughter was asleep under the quilt Hazel had made her.

"I wrote a rule," Hazel said.

She took a piece of paper from her robe.

It was the old list in blue ink, nine rules, creased soft at the folds.

At the bottom, in a new pen, she had added a tenth line.

I read it.

Stay.

"That's all?" I said.

"It's a short rule. You've been good at the other nine." She took the peppermint out and looked at it. "I was wrong about you in July. I thought you were another one."

"Another one of what?"

"A man who smiles in a kitchen and wants something."

"I do want something."

"I know. It's why I trust you." She put the peppermint back. "He wanted everything. You want one thing, and you've been very quiet about it."
