Chapter 18: Veil Rite
Ji-han woke at dawn on the day of the Autumn Moon with the bed empty beside him.
Tae-san stood at the window in his shirt with the veil hat in both hands.
He was turning it over, slowly.
The first grey light lay across his shoulders.
Ji-han watched him for a minute before Tae-san knew he was awake.
"I'm going to burn it," Tae-san said, without turning. "After tonight."
"A fine plan."
"It's a good hat. It's a shame."
"It's a dreadful hat. You look like a haunted lampshade."
Tae-san's shoulders shook once, and he turned around.
His eyes were red.
He had not slept.
"Ji-han. Tonight I stand in front of the old man who dressed his nephew's burns, and I say I'm nobody."
"You are not nobody."
"I carried a sword."
"You cooked for four hundred people the night before the wedding, and nobody noticed, because you did it so well."
Tae-san blinked.
"I did that?"
"Soo-bin told me. The old cook was sick, and you went into the annex at midnight and made the noodles."
"Nobody ever found out whose hand it was."
"That's not..."
"You held a gate for a dead man."
"You buried my Lord, who deserved a worse grave, and you scratched his flower on it with your own sword."
"You took a name you hated and you made it kinder."
Ji-han sat up.
The quilt slid down his chest.
"You took an arrow for me," he said. "I won't argue about whether that counts."
"Ji-han..."
"Come here."
Tae-san came.
Ji-han took the veil hat out of his hands and put it on the floor.
