Chapter 16: The Daughter

I pulled her in over the sill and dropped her on the floor.

She sat there in the snow melting off her white coat, shaking, with her arms wrapped around her knees.

Eskil was out of bed before I closed the window.

He pulled on his trousers and stood between us, and his voice was low and flat.

"What did you say?"

"My father wore silver on the cove," she said. "I was nineteen. I saw him come home."

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because of the cabin."

She looked up at me, and her face was blotchy.

"My father ordered the fire. I was standing in the kitchen at Tamarack when he told two of his wolves to burn the house on the point. He said the girl had something of his, and if it burned, it was gone."

"I said he couldn't," she said.

"He said I'd been softened by the Ironwood air."

I sat down on the edge of the bed.

My mother's quilt, her books, her hairbrush.

For one second I wanted to hurt this girl.

Then I looked at her hands, red and cracked with cold.

She had walked a long way in the snow with her coat open.
