Chapter 14: Her Mother's Kitchen

In February the auction house opened at four, in the dark, with the floor lights buzzing and sixty buyers standing in their parkas with paper cups.

I had a stool at the scale desk by then and a pencil behind my ear.

Nobody called me the other one on that floor anymore.

They called me Mrs. S, and they asked me to read them the weights twice.

At ten past five, with the first lot of scallops on the belt, I heard the side door bang.

I looked up and my father was walking across the wet concrete.

He was in his good coat.

He had not shaved.

"Ines!" he called. "My girl, a word."

The buyers turned their heads.

A hundred and twenty pounds of ice-packed scallops went past on the belt, unnoticed.

"Papa, I'm working."

"Just a moment."

"Not here," I said.

"Right here." He had reached the desk. He put both hands flat on it and leaned toward me, and the smell of whiskey came across the wood. "I need you to sign something. Just sign. You're the wife, you have authority."

He pulled a paper from his coat.

It was the second note.

Eighty-five thousand, against the store, with a line at the bottom that said Ines Sequeira, authorized signatory.

"I'm not a signatory."

"You are now. I had it drawn. Your husband won't see it. Sign, and the delivery's covered, and I'm out of your hair until June."
