Chapter 12: Four Minutes
The Ellingwood lake house sat at the end of a gravel road, forty minutes outside town, with a dock and a screened porch and a boat under a tarp.
My grandfather had built it with his own hands.
Lark drove with one eye on the mirror the whole way.
"Nobody followed," she said, finally. "Not that I can see."
My father's pickup was parked in the weeds by the dock.
He was sitting on the porch steps with his cap in his hands.
He stood up when he saw me, and I watched his face change when he saw how I was walking.
"Cal. What happened to you?"
"Three men with a van," I said. "They took Grandpa's tin."
He shut his eyes.
"She said she wouldn't," he said. "She promised your mother."
"Who did?"
"Natasha." He opened his eyes. "Come inside."
He put a kettle on the old stove and nobody touched it.
Lark stood near the door with her arms folded, where she could see the road.
My father sat across the table from me with his big hands flat on the wood.
"I have to say this in order," he said. "If I stop, I won't start again."
"Say it."
"You were born at eleven forty-one at night on the twenty-eighth of November. Your sister was born at eleven forty-five."
I stared at him.
The sentence sat in the room.
"No," I said. "Mom always said Natasha was first."
"Your mother said it because she wrote it that way."
"Dad."
"My father's will said the lumber company, this house and the trust go to the elder grandchild at thirty." He rubbed his face. "He never said it out loud. Everybody knew he wanted the firstborn. Your mother was terrified he'd leave it all to a boy."
