Chapter 15: The Bridge
On the ninth night of the truce I couldn't sleep.
The bond burned in my wrist, and Corwin lay in a tent two hundred paces away, on his mother's order.
I put on my grey coat and went out to the edge of the camp.
A narrow stone bridge crossed a stream there, between the Highcrest field and the northern packs' fires.
I wanted cold air and no one's eyes.
Someone was already standing on the bridge.
He stood at the middle, in a plain brown cloak with the hood back, and the moon lit his sandy cropped hair.
"Hello, Elowen," Brogan said.
My wolf came up inside me so fast my knees bent.
"You're a long way from your new throne," I said.
"I came alone. I came without a banner. I wanted to see you with no one listening."
He smiled his pleasant smile.
It was the same smile he had worn in the Moon Hall, when he said the words.
Then he coughed.
It bent him over, a wet, grinding cough, and he put a hand on the stone rail.
