Chapter 17: The Mark

The packs would ride for Grayhall at dawn, and my wolf would not lie down.

I paced my tent in my shirt, with my braid undone and Catriona snarling at her guards in the next tent over.

The mark on my wrist hurt.

Twenty nights alone on a cot had worn something thin in me.

The thread ran two hundred paces across the field to another man.

The flap lifted.

Corwin ducked in, with his coat open and the lantern behind him throwing his shadow across the canvas.

"Your mother," I said.

"Asleep. Or pretending to be."

"She told you not to."

"She told me not to claim you." He let the flap fall. "I'm not here to claim you."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because tomorrow I may watch you die in that hall." His voice was rough. "And I won't do it without having touched you first."

"Good," I said. "I'd have come to your tent if you hadn't."

I crossed the floor and pulled him down by his collar.

I kissed him, and it was nothing like the cell.

It was slow, and deep, and it went all the way down into my knees.

He made a low sound in his chest and pulled my hips flush against his, and I felt how hard he already was.

"Twenty nights," he said into my mouth.
