Chapter 12: Two Babies, One Father

Grady took the ultrasound from my hand.

He held it under the corridor light.

I watched his eyes move down the page.

The date. My name. The gestational age.

A small gray shape in the middle of the white.

A line of print under it: FETAL HEART RATE 160.

He read it twice.

His knees gave out and he sat down on the floor of the corridor in his good trousers.

"That's mine," he said.

"Yes."

"That's really mine."

"It's yours, Grady."

The guard looked at the ceiling.

Nobody said anything.

Grady pressed the picture flat against his chest with both hands.

Then he put his head down and his shoulders began to shake.

I had waited four years to see him cry for a baby.

I stood over him and felt almost nothing.

"All this time," he whispered.

"All this time, you let me think it was me."

"I thought..." He wiped his face. "I thought if you knew, you'd leave. I thought it was better if it was a sad thing that happened to us. Not something I did."

"You didn't do anything. You hid it."

"Claire."

"You went to Summer."

He looked up.

Summer stood stock-still a few feet away, with one hand on her stomach.

"Grady," she said. Her voice was very soft. "It's still yours too. We don't have to fix anything."
