Chapter 18: The Mark

He lay on the bunk with his shirt off and my bite showing at the base of his neck.

I stood over him with a coil of paracord.

The stove threw red light across his chest.

The wrappings on his hands were still tied, and I did not take them off.

"Wrists," I said.

He lifted them.

"You're sure?"

"Tie me, Lola."

I looked at the mark on my own neck in the dark window glass.

It had gone purple and gold overnight, a ring of small deep punctures that anyone in the valley could read.

I had not covered it once.

I climbed onto the bunk and straddled his hips in my jeans and my bra.

I took his bound hands and stretched them over his head.

The paracord came from the bottom of my fire bag, where it had stayed since Arizona.

I wound it three times around his wrists and looped it through the iron rail of the bunk.

I pulled it snug and knotted it with a hitch I could tie in the dark.

He tested it.

The iron creaked, and his arms did not move.

"Good," I said.

"Is it?"

"You can't touch me. You can only watch."

He made a sound low in his throat.

I felt him swell against my ass through his jeans.

I unhooked my bra and let it fall.

His eyes dropped to my breasts and stayed there, black and wide.

I leaned down, close enough that my nipples brushed his chest, and I put my mouth on his neck.

I licked the old bite.

I licked up the cord of his throat to the hinge of his jaw, to the soft place under it where his pulse was kicking.

"Nothing that shows," he said, hoarsely.

"That was my rule," I said.

"You said it in the Puesto," he said.

"I was a fool in the Puesto."

I opened my mouth against his skin and bit him.

I bit hard.

My teeth sank into the muscle at the side of his throat, and I tasted copper and salt.

His whole body arched off the mattress.

He shouted.

The iron rail clanged.

I held him there and felt my wolf come up through me and look out of my eyes.

I felt the wound fill and his blood beat against my tongue.
