Chapter 12: The Scorecard

I did not turn around right away.

The notebook was still open in my hand, and I could feel the pages in my fingers.

"Remo."

"You grade me."

"Put it down."

"You let me think it was luck." I turned. "You let me be grateful."

She sat up in bed with the sheet pulled over her breasts.

Her hair was flat on one side, and her bandage glowed white in the lamplight.

For the first time since I met her, she looked like she had nowhere to put her hands.

"I wrote the tests," Rosalia said.

I said nothing.

"Not my father. Me. He told me in March he wanted a successor, and I said I'd find one." She swallowed. "He'd have picked some cousin or some old man's grandson and called it a vote. I made the list, and I arranged what I could."

"You arranged the bar owner calling me."

"I asked him to call."

"You arranged the gas station."

"No. That was Corrado." She flinched. "I didn't know about the gas station until it happened. I swear that."

"What about the bribe?"

"Corrado did that on his own. It was better than anything I'd have written."

"And the bullets?"

"That was not part of the test."

Her voice cracked on the last word.

I set the notebook down on the desk, very carefully, as if it would break.

"Why?"

"My father is dying."

She said it flatly, the way she'd said I keep the books.

"Lung cancer. They found it in March. The doctor gave him eight months, and that was seven months ago. I think he'll see Christmas if he stays still, and he won't stay still." She wet her lips. "The commission has five old men on it. They've known me since I was a baby. They have also spent every day for twenty years telling me why a woman can't hold the ring."
