Chapter 14: March

Leander didn't answer her.

He pushed off the wall and walked straight back through the doors of the Moon Hall.

Rupert and I looked at each other and went after him.

The Alphas were still at the long table, pouring each other whiskey.

The King was at the head of it, alone in his big chair, with his hands still folded.

Leander stopped in front of him.

"Not here," the King said quietly.

"Here's where you didn't raise your hand."

"Lee. Please. The kitchen."

It was the first time I'd heard him beg anyone but my mother.

Leander looked at him for a long second.

Then he turned on his heel and walked out, and the King got up and limped after him.

Rupert caught my sleeve.

"Come," he said. "If it's just them, one of them leaves."

The kitchen was dark except for the light over the stove.

The King stood by the big scrubbed table where I'd taped Leander's knuckles.

Leander stood at the sink with his back to all of us.
