Chapter 22: The Fall
The water was cold to my knees, and I did not feel it.
Osric looked round, and then he laughed.
"Go back to the bank, girl. This ring is for Alphas."
"Then it's mine as well," I said.
I put my hands out to my sides, and the wolf came up through me.
The bones went hot.
The silver burns on my wrists split and healed in the space of a breath.
I stood in the shallows half-changed, grey and gold, with claws on my fingers.
A ring of fire burned round the black of my eyes.
"I am Rhona Ashdown," I said, in a voice that was both of ours.
"You put my father's daughter in the race. I'm calling you out for my father's seat."
A noise went up from the Mirefold bank that I had never heard from a crowd.
It was not cheering.
It was a hundred people breathing in at once.
Osric stopped laughing.
He came at me fast.
I had never fought anyone in my life, but my wolf had, and she knew where to put my feet.
His ring hand swept at my face.
I smelled the paste a breath ahead of it and ducked the arm, and my claws opened a long red line down his ribs.
