Chapter 23: Graduation

Tate put the phone on speaker and set it on the table between them.

"Hi, Mom."

"Tate." The woman's voice was thin and rushed and far away.

"Honey, I'm in the car. I watched it. Somebody from your church sent me the video."

"Which one?" Tate asked.

"Both."

Nobody spoke.

"I left you with him," she said.

"I told myself the judge would never give him custody, and I was right. Then I never came back to check."

"You were four hours away, Mom."

"I know how far it was." Her voice broke. "I have no right to ask you anything."

"Ask me what you want."

"I want to come to your graduation."

Tate looked at Judah.

Judah nodded, once.

"Okay," Tate said. "Come. Bring the deed to Grandma's house too. Hannah's mom says it's in your name."

A shaky laugh came down the line.

"I'll sign it over the day I get there."

In May the bleachers at Corbin County High were so full that people stood along the fence.

Hannah Ostler gave the valedictory with her braid over her shoulder and a card she never looked at.

"I want to thank my best friend, Judah Redmayne," she said.
