Chapter 16: Gifts on the Step
For four years I'd waited for Vin to look at me the way he was looking at me now.
On the floor, in the glass, I'd have given anything for it.
Now it just looked like a man kneeling in the wrong place.
I stepped around him.
My heel came down an inch from his hand, and I didn't break stride.
Behind the new window, forty people watched me do it.
Kirill was standing by the open car door.
He didn't help me in.
He waited until I was in and the door was shut.
Then he walked back to the sidewalk and looked down at the Don of South Philadelphia, on his knees, in front of his own captains.
"Vincenzo," he said. "Get off the ground. Your men are watching you through the glass."
Vin didn't move.
"Get up," Kirill said, "or I'll lift you, and you won't like where I put you."
Vin got up.
His trousers were grey with sidewalk dust at the knees.
Kirill nodded once to the faces in the window and came around to the driver's side.
