Chapter 20: Dedication
Four hundred people in evening clothes filled the Pavilion lobby, drinking champagne.
I stood near the champagne tower in a green dress I had bought the day my suspension ended.
Bev stood next to me in black velvet with a canvas tote bag over her shoulder.
It was the kind a person uses for groceries.
A three-inch white binder showed at the top.
"Nobody's frisking old ladies tonight," she said.
"Do you see him?"
"Not yet."
"Good.
He's better at a crowd than we are."
The glass hall glittered.
Waiters in white jackets threaded through with trays.
The portrait stood on its easel in the center of the lobby, hidden under a white cloth.
Only the gold frame showed at the edges.
At the front, on a low stage, Sybil Everhart sat in a wheelchair beside the lectern.
