Chapter 20: Burning

Hanjue did not kneel.

He stood on the top step of the Tomb ridge with the seal's orange light on his face.

The pain went through him in long ripples.

His knee shook.

He kept it straight.

"No," he said, and the whole crowd heard it.

"Kneel."

"No."

Elder Pei shook the seal.

"You are bound, creature. You have always been bound."

"My name is Hanjue," said Hanjue. "My other name is Gu Yunzhao. I was bound by fear for three hundred years, and I am done."

He took a step forward, and another, with the pain tearing at him.

At the third step he reached the Elder and put one large pale hand over the glowing bronze.

It sizzled against his palm.

He did not let go.

"Take your hand away!" Pei shrieked.

"Let go of it yourself."

Yan's uncle stepped up on one side, and the formation mistress of the Plum Wheel on the other.

Each laid a hand on the Elder's wrist.

They did not twist or pull, they only held it down, quietly, in front of eleven sects, and Pei's grip opened by itself.

The seal clanged to the stone.

The light went out.

"The Hall will answer for this at the proper time," said Yan's uncle, heavily. "Not before the guests."

Pei stood with his empty hand curled at his chest.

No one spoke to him.

Hanjue's burned palm was blistering white, and Chuhe was at his side before he knew he had moved.
