Chapter 9: Kickoff
By the third match of the group stage, the squad had a name for it.
They called it the Ritual.
Nobody said it out loud in front of the coaching staff, but it was written in every player's face.
Forty minutes before kickoff, Mercer, Bram and Dex walked past the kitchen annex, one at a time, and I stood in the service hall with my jacket open.
I wasn't their lucky charm.
I knew that.
I also knew my own heartbeat, and it said I wanted to be there.
The match was against the best team in the group.
The stadium roared above us through the concrete, a deep far sound.
I had a laundry cart pushed against the wall of the service corridor behind the tunnel, with a pile of clean white towels on it, and I sat on the edge of the towels with my legs apart and my back against the cinderblock.
Mercer had gone first.
It had been hot and brief, his hand on my throat and his mouth on my breast and two fingers inside me until I shook, and he had wiped his lip and said, "Wait for it, I'll score in the first twenty," and left.
