Chapter 17: The Night Before
That night my mother stayed at Graham's.
She texted that she would be late, and that I should be rested, and that she was proud of us for being brave.
I read it aloud in the guest room where Wade had slept for three weeks.
Julian laughed, short and dry.
Wade took the phone and put it face down on the dresser.
"No more of her tonight," he said.
The guest room was small, with a double bed, a green quilt, and one lamp that threw a yellow circle on the ceiling.
Wade sat on the edge of the mattress.
Julian stood by the window in his shirtsleeves.
I stood between them in my underwear, with my arms folded, feeling every inch of the quiet.
"Tomorrow we do this in public," I said. "Tonight it's ours."
"Whatever you want," Wade said.
"I want something I haven't seen yet."
Julian turned his head.
"Wade," I said. "Stand up."
He stood.
"Julian. Come here."
Julian crossed the room slowly.
They faced each other, the broad man and the lean one, close enough to feel each other's heat.
