Chapter 19: The Carry
The Carry is the oldest trial of the Moot.
It was the Gamma's trial before it was anyone's.
Each team lifts one full-grown wolf, in wolf skin, in a sling, and carries it across eleven miles of shale between the quarry and the old breaker.
The wolf weighs a hundred and forty pounds.
The sling hangs from two poles, and the six on a team may trade the weight as often as they like.
It is the only trial where the weight is real.
The Moot had given the Carry to the last day for the same reason that the old packs gave the Gamma's seat to whoever dug the graves.
If a pack could not carry its dead, it would not carry anything else.
I stood at the quarry in the early morning mist with five people who had not slept.
The bartender's temple was black.
The foreman wheezed.
The diver stood in the cold mud in her bare feet, flexing her toes.
The twins, for once, said nothing.
"Who goes first?" said the foreman.
"I do," I said.
"No," said the diver.
"You hold the numbers.
"Gamma carries the last."
"I'm not the Gamma."
"You're whatever the dead say," said the bartender.
"Shut up and eat something."
