Ramiro's POV
On the night before the Count, I took the horn to the edge of the Rim.
I meant to blow it in front of the only person I trusted to hear me fail.
The cliff dropped away in front of us, black, with the lights of Payson spilled across the valley floor.
A wall of cloud stood on the western horizon, and it flickered without sound.
Ximena sat on a flat rock a few feet behind me with her boots tucked under her and her braid over one shoulder.
She had brought a thermos of coffee and two tamales wrapped in foil, and she had not asked me for anything.
I lifted the horn to my mouth and drew breath.
My hands shook at once.
I held the brass against my lip.
The sound I was afraid of lived at the back of my skull, long and low, with a woman running in front of it.
My throat shut.
I lowered the horn.
"Again," I said, to myself.
