Chapter 18: The Microphone

Tucker's father didn't sit down.

He stood at our table in the middle of the Lakeshore dining room, with forty diners pretending to eat.

"My son says you have a recording," he said. "He says it's been edited."

"I haven't touched it," I said.

"Then you won't mind if I hear it."

"I mind very much if you hear it alone." I laid my napkin on the table. "He's had eight years of people hearing only what he wanted. Saturday, at your gala, I'll play it where everyone can listen."

Tucker laughed behind his father's shoulder.

His father didn't turn his head.

"Saturday," he said, and walked out, and his son followed him with the smile still on his face.

The Palmer House ballroom on Saturday night held four hundred people in black tie under three crystal chandeliers.

I wore a dark green dress that Bev had pinned at the hem herself.

She walked in beside me in her navy dress and her good shoes, with the silver wren on her collar, and looked around.

"Well," she said. "They've spent a lot on flowers."

"Gran."

"I'm only observing."

Heath's hand was warm at the small of my back.

Dex waved from the sound booth at the far end, and I raised two fingers.

Tucker's father took the stage at nine.

He talked about forty years of Maddox Homes and the families in its houses, and the room applauded where it should.

Then he said, "My son would like to say a few words."

Tucker walked up in a midnight suit, with his hair combed and his father's hand on his shoulder for the camera.
