Chapter 8: Fenwick Lane

The branch manager had a small office with a glass wall and a bowl of wrapped mints.

She closed the door and sat across from me.

"Mrs. Roark, I'm going to be honest with you about what I can see."

"Please."

"A wire went out of the joint savings at eight oh four this morning." She turned her monitor. "One hundred and forty thousand dollars. It was entered online on Sunday night."

"Entered by whom?"

"Your husband's login." She waited a moment. "Both of you have full access to this account, so the bank treated it as authorized."

"Where did it go?"

She tapped the screen.

"Brightwater Title and Escrow. The memo reads, Closing funds, 2218 Fenwick Lane."

I read the line three times.

My mother had left me ninety thousand dollars when she died.

I had put every cent of it into that account, because Calvin had said we should keep our money in one place.

"Can you take it back?" I asked.

"I can send a recall request. It isn't a guarantee. Once a title company has funds, it can hold them until closing." She hesitated. "Mrs. Roark, do you know what's at Fenwick Lane?"

"I'm about to find out."

I pulled out my phone and searched the address on the county records page.

It took only a moment.
