Chapter 21: Locked Out
Mitchell was on my front step with his key in the lock when Ansel's truck pulled into the drive.
It was almost midnight, and every porch light on our street was on.
The neighbors stood on their lawns in coats thrown over pajamas, holding phones.
I got out of the truck and stayed on the walkway.
Mitchell turned the key and pushed, and the door did not move.
He turned it again, harder, and I heard the brass grind in the new cylinder.
"Felicity," he said, without turning.
"There's a fault in the lock."
"It's not a fault," Ansel said, from the foot of the steps.
"I changed every lock in the house at nine this morning."
"My wife's house, Mr. Doyle," Mitchell said, very evenly.
"Our house," he said. "I live here."
"It's my father's house," I said. "He bought it the year before he died, and the deed is in the Linden trust."
"The trust that came to me at nine o'clock Thursday."
He finally faced me, and he looked older under the porch light.
His coat was wrinkled, and there was a grease mark on one cuff.
