Chapter 11: The Offer

I went down alone, in my coat over my pajamas, with my mother's letter folded in the pocket.

Kelsey stayed upstairs with my roommate and the notebook.

The sky behind the dorm was turning gray.

A few students were out on the lawn already, a jogger and two girls with coffee, and they slowed down when Dad got out of the truck.

He wore a clean shirt, and he had shaved.

He looked like he'd been up all night and had decided not to show it.

"Britta Holm."

"Dad."

"Where is your sister?"

"Upstairs. She's safe."

"She took something from my desk."

"She brought me something that belongs to me."

His face didn't change, and that was how I knew I had it right.

He took a breath through his nose and put a folded sheet of paper into my hand.

"Read it," he said. "Then we can all go home and be reasonable."

It was typed.

At the top it said: Acknowledgment of Support.

I read down the page.

It said that I, Britta Holm, confirmed that Dale Holm had provided for my care and education in full, and that I made no claim against him or the KH Fund for any reason.

"What is this?"

"A settlement between family," Dad said. "I'll pay off your loans. All of them. I'll give you twenty thousand in cash, and I'll send your grandmother a new roof."
