Chapter 20: The Mother
Trevor's mother poured the tea herself, with the maid's afternoon off and the house gone silent around us.
She wore the pearls again.
She set a cup in front of me and settled into the wing chair across the coffee table, straight as a coat rack.
"You are very quiet, Lainey."
"I'm told I used to talk more."
"Hm." She stirred her cup without making a sound. "My son tells me you can't hold a pen."
"Not with this hand."
"And that you don't remember him."
"I'm sorry. I wish I did."
"Do you?"
I met her eyes, which were Trevor's eyes, blue and watchful, in a face thirty years older and harder.
"I wish I remembered something that would help," I said.
She set her spoon down on the saucer.
"I'll be plain, because I am sixty and I don't have time for subtle." She folded her hands. "Since Sunday, four people who were going to give him money have walked out of his restaurant, and his manager has quit. This morning I phoned the bank."
