Chapter 18: Visiting Hours

The county holding center had one visiting room, and it had a bolted table and a window full of wire.

They brought Donovan in at two o'clock in an orange jumpsuit two sizes short in the sleeve.

His hands were wrapped in fresh gauze, and a guard stood by the door with his arms folded.

"No contact," the guard said.

"Of course," I said, and crossed the room and put my forehead against Donovan's.

The guard looked at the ceiling.

Donovan breathed out through his nose, long and slow.

"They keep the lights on," he said, against my hair. "All night. It's the first jail I've ever liked."

"You've been in jail before?"

"I've owned a share of one."

I laughed, and my voice cracked in the middle, and I sat down across the bolted table before it could crack further.

"The bail hearing is Thursday," I said. "Your lawyer says a judge can keep you till then on the strength of one frightened boy."

"The boy is Alden's."

"I know."

"He's been on my payroll eight months. Alden bought him in March."
