Chapter 5: The Ninth Floor
On Thursday morning I went to Memorial Sloan Kettering to collect my father's things.
I had a clear plastic bag in my hand and nothing in my head except a list of questions.
The woman at the front desk sent me to the ninth floor, where the clinical research office had a glass door and a coffee machine that didn't work.
A woman in her fifties looked up from a desk piled with folders.
She had gray in her hair and a lanyard with six keys on it.
"You're his daughter," she said. "You have his chin."
"Abby."
"I'm so sorry, Abby. Come in. Sit."
My father had sat in that chair every Tuesday for four months, waiting for a screening.
On the corner of her desk, there was a dish of mints.
"He brought those," she said. "A bag a week. I told him it was unprofessional. He said so was my coffee."
I laughed, and that made my eyes burn.
She gave me a minute without being asked.
"I came for his file," I said. "And for the truth about his spot."
Her face didn't change, but her hands stopped moving on the folders.
"Do you know what happened to it?"
"I know my husband had it moved. I want to hear it from someone who was in the room."
She looked at the door and then back at me.
"I wasn't in the room," she said. "I was on the phone. It was July eleventh."
She pressed her lips together.
"A man from the Rinaldi Foundation's office called the director. They fund the children's wing upstairs, and they sit on the donor board. He said a friend of the family needed a place for her mother right away."
