Chapter 11: The Engineer

I read it twice.

Then I called Jesse.

He'd dropped Mabel at his mother's for the night an hour ago. He picked up on the first ring.

"I'm going to a diner to meet a stranger who works for my husband," I said. "I'm telling you so somebody knows."

"Which diner?"

"The one on Kinnickinnic."

"I'll drive."

"I can drive now."

"I know you can. I'll drive anyway. I'll sit in the truck. I won't come in."

The diner was open all night, a long silver box with steamed-up windows and a pie case that turned slowly under a light.

Jesse parked across the street where he could see the front booths.

"Text me every ten minutes," he said. "Even if it's just a rock emoji."

"There's no rock emoji."

"Then a sad face. I'll know."

The man in the back booth was in his forties, with thinning sandy hair and a TenScore fleece zipped to his chin.

He stood up halfway when I came in, then sat down again.

"You're the nurse."

"Casey."

"Don't. Don't tell me things. I don't want to know your things." He pushed a menu at me. "Order something. People who just sit look suspicious."

I ordered coffee and a slice of cherry pie.

He'd already ordered a short stack of pancakes he wasn't eating.

"You sent the screenshot," I said.

He flinched.

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't have to."

He looked down at his pancakes.

"I've been there five years," he said. "I built the scoring engine for the app. The habit stuff. Coffee, workouts, whatever. It's harmless. It's dumb, but it's harmless."

"And the hospital queue?"

"Same engine." He turned his fork over. "They asked me to build a medical version last spring. I said I didn't know anything about medicine. They said it didn't matter. It's just inputs."
