Chapter 10: The Grave
The county cemetery sat behind a tire shop on the east side, flat and green, with no trees to speak of.
Yancey came every other Sunday at ten.
He brought a paper cup of coffee from the gas station, because his mother had never trusted a day that started without it, and he set it on the grass at the foot of the stone.
The stone was small and grey.
It said Beloved Mother and two dates, and under that a line he'd had to save for eleven months to pay for.
He sat down on the grass beside it and pulled his knees up.
"Hey, Mama," he said.
A mower droned somewhere beyond the fence.
"I got a new job. You'd laugh. It's a desk, with a phone. I'm good at it."
He picked a clover.
"I'm doing something stupid, too. You'd say so. You'd tell me I've got your temper and my father's sense."
He heard a car door shut on the gravel road.
He did not turn around.
Footsteps came across the grass, slow, and stopped well behind him.
"Dewey told me I'd find you here," Jud said.
"He told you?" Yancey said.
"I asked. He made me promise I'd leave if you said so."
