Chapter 9: The Lot

The lunch box had a sticky note on the lid that said *FOR THE BABY. EAT IT ALL. R.*

Jamie found it on the kitchen island at noon, abandoned, and stood looking at it for a full minute.

He was nine weeks pregnant, he had a free afternoon, and he had never seen the inside of Roman's world.

He ordered a car.

The Aldecott Pictures lot sat on forty acres in Burbank behind a gate and a guardhouse and a water tower painted with the studio's old gold logo.

The guard took one look at the name on Jamie's phone, went the color of putty, and waved him through without checking anything.

"Everyone does that?" Jamie asked the driver.

"Everyone, sir," the driver said. "Mr. Aldecott doesn't come to the lot much. People get nervous."

"Why?"

"Last year he walked in on a producer lying to a financier. The producer left by the fire exit."

"That's it?"

"He didn't say anything. He just stood there."

Jamie got out in front of a long white building and carried the lunch box inside.

The lobby was a vault of marble and posters.

Every person in it stopped talking as he walked by.

Not out of rudeness.

They looked at the sticky note, and then at his face.
