Chapter 15: What He Wanted

Arthur's POV

Laura put the Release in her pocket and gave me until three o'clock.

"Write down what you want," she said, in front of my whole family. "Not what's fair. Not what I'd want. And it can't be me."

"Why not you?" I asked.

"Because I'm not a want, I'm a person," Laura said. "Go sit somewhere and be bad at it."

She left with Holly holding her elbow.

My mother went upstairs without a word, carrying the toaster.

By ten past twelve, I was alone in the library with a glass case that held a pen and no paper.

I took a sheet of Endicott stationery from the desk.

The box said eleven dollars a sheet.

I had read that as a boy, to find out what a thought cost.

I wrote: One. Laura.

I crossed it out, because she had said not her.

I wrote: Two. A house where nobody has to open the windows.

Three. To be forgiven.

Four. A job.

The library door opened, and Peter came in sideways with his clipboard.
