Chapter 17: Ask Her Why She Forgot
They brought Lorna to the treaty stones at noon the next day with silver cuffs on her wrists.
Both packs came.
Brindle Creek lined the near bank, and Ironwood filled the far one, and the creek ran loud between them.
Lorna's apron was gone.
Her braid had come loose, and there was dried mud on her knees from the bridge.
Nobody called her Poor Thing now.
I stood on the stones between Ewan and Nan with my back straight.
The Elder took the highest rock and struck his staff on the ground once.
"Alpha Stroud," he said. "You asked me to hear this."
"I did." Garrick stepped forward, grey in the face. "The Beta will show the packs what was said on the footbridge."
The Beta held up his phone and let the whole ring hear her voice, small and tinny and perfectly clear.
A sound moved through the Ironwood wolves.
When the recording ended, nobody in either pack moved.
A woman at the front of the Ironwood line, the same one who had cried at the hearing, turned her face away from Lorna and spat on the ground.
Lorna saw it.
"You all liked me," she said, in a cracked whisper. "You said you were glad I was there."
Nobody answered her.
"A man died," the Elder said. "A boy was poisoned for a year. A woman was lashed for a fire she did not set."
He lifted his staff and pointed it at me.
"Rowena Stockdale, you are cleared of the burning of the herb store, before both packs. The six strokes you took were laid on you in error. The Council names the error Ironwood's."
I heard it, and my knees tried to give.
