Chapter 17: Thursday Night

I looked at that one brown eye through the gap in the fence.

"Monday," I said.

"Monday. Dad already said. Full back pay. Nobody has to know she was gone."

"And all I have to do is not go to your town hall."

"All you have to do is stay home one night." He smiled through the board. "You stay home every night anyway, Linnie. You're a nursing student."

I started to laugh.

I didn't plan it.

It just came up out of me, in that little square backyard, with the hotdish still warm in my stomach.

"What?" he said.

"Your dad fired her yesterday," I said. "On speakerphone. And today you're offering to give it back. You broke something and now you're trying to sell it to me."

"I'm trying to help."

"You're trying to buy one night of me not holding a microphone."

The back door opened behind me.

Jace's mom came out onto the step with a dish towel over her shoulder.

She squinted at the fence.

"Tanner Rasmus, is that you?"

Tanner straightened up fast.

"Hi, Mrs. Thorsen."

"Get your face out of my fence," she said. "That board's mine. I paid for half of it in two thousand twelve."

Tanner's eye disappeared from the gap.

I heard his sneakers go back across his patio, quick, and the slider door shut.

His mom looked at me.

"Was he offering you something?"
