Chapter 14: Ray's Book
I found my father the way I had always found him, by looking for a screen with a football game on it.
The lawyer's people took forty minutes.
He was at a sports bar on Troy Street, the one with the red awning and the neon beer signs.
It was Thursday night, and the television above the bar showed two teams I had never cared about.
I stood in the doorway with Lana.
My father sat on the third stool in his faded jersey with a pile of folded bills beside his glass.
He was talking to the bartender with his hands, happy.
"Twenty-six thousand dollars," the lawyer said in my ear.
She had come in her gray raincoat and stood a step behind us.
"Is that all of it?"
"Twenty-four now. He lost two on the early game."
Lana folded her arms.
"He is betting a church's furnace money on a quarter he can't even see."
"He's good at this," I said. "I know. I paid for it."
