Chapter 27: Sentence

He was gray.

Big and gray, with his head low, the same wolf that had tried my stair in the alley two months ago.

I saw that in the half second he was in the air.

Then something black hit him from the side.

Judd had shifted on the run.

His shirt was in rags on the floor behind him, and he took Wendell out of the air three feet from my face.

They hit the boards together and rolled.

The hall exploded.

Wolves shouted and fell back to the walls, and the front rank on the lawn surged in through the doors to see.

Ket swung her chained wrists and knocked me behind her.

"Stay back," she snarled. "I swear to God, Ordway, stay back."

"I'm back!"

The two wolves came up snarling, chest to chest.

Wendell was faster.

He'd always been faster.

He went for Judd's leg, the one I'd stitched, and got it, and Judd screamed through his teeth.

I heard my own voice shout his name.

Judd twisted.

He didn't pull away.

He dropped his whole weight on Wendell's back, and the gray wolf's legs folded under it.
