Chapter 5: The Guest
The boardroom was on the top floor of the warehouse, behind a glass wall, and for six years I had only ever been in it to present.
On Friday I came in as Colter's guest.
Five directors sat at the long table.
The chair, an older woman who had run a hospital system, looked at me over her glasses and said nothing.
The company lawyer sat at Tim's elbow with a folder.
Sienna sat in the corner with a laptop open, taking the minutes.
She had dressed carefully in navy, and she did not look at me.
"Ms. Brecker is here at my invitation," Colter said, pulling out the chair beside his. "She was present at the event the first agenda item concerns."
"This is a private meeting of the directors," Tim said.
"Then it'll be short," the chair said. "Sit, Ms. Brecker. Mr. Corbin, go ahead."
Tim did not look at me once.
He had put on the grave, open face he used when he was about to be generous to someone.
"This is hard for me," he said. "Hannah has been a valued colleague for nine years. But on Thursday night, in front of two hundred employees and our press partners, she walked out of a company celebration in a state of distress. On Monday she returned and disrupted a staff meeting."
"She stood at the back and spoke two sentences," Colter said.
"She made a scene."
"By saying her name."
"I move," Tim said, over him, "that the board find cause under her option agreement, and cancel her unvested and vested grants."
The lawyer opened the folder and passed a sheet around the table.
