Chapter 5: The Deal

"Don't post a word about the team," the lawyer had told me. "Not a caption, not a sticker. Their whole case is the word 'post.'"

She had folded her hands over the agreement.

"Speaking is different. You can say what you like to anyone's face, in any room, without a camera in your hand."

On the drive back along the lake I stared at the black water and thought about that.

"The team gala is Saturday," I said.

Soren kept his eyes on the road.

"The sponsors come, the owner comes, the whole board comes. And Brady stands up and gives a speech about family."

"Yes."

"I want to be in that room."

"You're not invited."

"You are."

He was quiet for a mile.

"Alternate captains get a plus-one," he said at last. "I've never used mine."

"Then use it."

He pulled onto the shoulder and stopped the truck.

I thought he was going to refuse.

Instead he took his hands off the wheel and turned to face me, and he was so large in the cab that I could feel the heat of him from across the seat.

"Terms," he said.

"Excuse me?"

"One night. You're my date, you walk in on my arm, you say what you came to say, and when it's over I drive you home." He held up one finger. "Nothing real. Nobody believes it's anything but a favor."

"Fine."

"And no cameras on my face. Not your phone. Not anyone's. If somebody points a lens at me I walk."

I looked at him.
