Chapter 14: Norma
My mother looked at the two of us in her doorway and put down her teacup.
"Who hit whom?" she said.
Luciano's lip was split, and one cheek was still red from my hand.
"Me," I said. "I hit him."
"Good," said Norma Hostetter. "Come in and shut the door."
She sat up against three pillows in the pink cardigan, with her gray hair brushed and her chest bandaged under the gown.
The lilies still stood on the windowsill.
She had not thrown them out.
Luciano stopped a few steps inside the room, with his hands at his sides.
He had put on a clean shirt in the car, and his face was the stillest I had ever seen it.
"Mrs. Hostetter," he said.
"I know who you are."
"Yes."
"You sent a lawyer to my door twice."
"I did."
"Did you think I would take it?"
"No," he said. "I thought you would know somebody was sorry."
My mother studied him.
She looked at his height and his black suit and the scar through his eyebrow, and she looked at him as she had once looked at boys who came to my school dances.
"I was a secretary for twenty-six years," she said. "I've sat across a desk from a lot of men who had done something and wanted a pass."
