Tobias's POV

I put her on my office couch with my jacket over her and a bottle of water on the floor.

She was asleep in six minutes.

She said "don't" once more before she went, and I knew what she meant by it, and I walked out of the room anyway.

It was the hardest thing I had done in years.

I went into the conference room across the hall, turned on one lamp, and opened the laptop.

I had known since the afternoon that something was wrong with Hollister Group's numbers.

Fifty-one percent of the voting stock had been cast, every year for twelve years, by a proxy holder.

It never changed.

It never showed up.

The proxy holder never asked a question at a shareholder meeting, never nominated a board member and never once voted against Lloyd Hollister's slate.

Somebody had given their vote away so completely that it was almost the same as being dead.

I pulled the probate file for my father, who had died in Evanston twelve years ago.

It was public.

Anyone could have found it who thought to look.

He had bought into Hollister Group at the start with a loan against his own house.

His will left his entire holding to his only daughter.

Tamara, twenty years old, grieving, in a hospital waiting room with her boyfriend holding her hand.

Her boyfriend had been appointed her trustee eleven days later.

I read the next document twice.
