Chapter 6: On Her Knees

I went to the library at seven without telling anyone.

The manor was silent when I crept down the stairs, and the gate opened on its own as I walked up to it.

I decided not to think about that.

The campus library was empty at that hour. The lamps were still on, and the long tables were bare.

Gavin sat at the last one in the corner, with his coat still buttoned up to his chin.

His ears were red already.

"You came," he said.

"You said it was about the ceremony." I stayed standing. "You have five minutes."

"I never wanted it, Seren."

"You walked past me. You kissed her in front of everyone."

"I know." He dragged a hand over his face. "I know what it looked like. I've watched myself do it every night for two months. I didn't choose it. I swear to the Goddess, I didn't choose it."

"Then who did?"

He opened his mouth.

His eyes slid past me to the glass doors behind my shoulder, and the blood went out of his face.

I turned around.

Someone stood on the other side of the glass, tall and pale and perfectly still.

It was one of Evander's friends.

He did not knock, and he did not come in. He simply watched.

"I can't," Gavin whispered. "Not here. They're everywhere."

"Gavin."

He grabbed his bag and stood so fast the chair scraped.

"Ask him," he said, and his voice cracked. "Ask your mate what his father's been buying."

"What does that mean?"

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

He ran for the side door.

I stood in the empty library with my heart pounding and my bandaged palm throbbing.
