Chapter 15: The Tablet
On the third evening the old man climbed the bakery stair.
I heard him from the first step.
A man with a bad knee cannot go up a back staircase quietly, and he did not try.
He stopped outside my door.
He did not knock.
"Thalia," Aris said through the wood. "I am not coming in. I have something to put down."
I got up from the bed.
I stood with my hand on the bolt for a long minute.
Then I drew it, and opened the door.
He stood on the narrow landing in his peacoat with the bare bulb over his head.
He looked ten years older.
He held the tablet in both hands against his chest.
"You have not eaten," I said.
"No."
"Come in."
He came in and stood in the middle of the little room.
He did not touch anything.
I shut the door, and I did not bolt it.
He held out the tablet.
"It is the only copy," Aris said.
"The church had one," he said. "I went to the priest this morning, and he watched me erase it. I have no other."
