Chapter 19: Nothing to Hide

There were two photographers on Rhys's lawn when I pulled up that night, and one of them said my name like we'd met.

I walked between them with my chin up and my coat collar turned.

Rhys opened the door before I could knock, and shut it behind me, and put his forehead against the wood.

"They suspended me," he said.

"I saw."

"The general manager called at five. I'm not on the ice tomorrow. I'm not on the screen. I'm not in the building." He turned around. "If I show up, I hand over the C."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be." He looked at me. "I've never been so glad to have nothing to protect."

"The replay guy has Colby's footage," I said. "It's sitting in the slot with my name on it."

"Then it's done."

"It's done," I said. "Everyone in the city has seen my hands in your sweatshirt. There's nothing left to hide."

He went very still.

"Say that again."

"There is nothing left to hide, Rhys."

"Allies," he said, in a voice that had gone low and rough. "Not until the last public scene is done. Isn't that what you said?"

"I overrule myself."

He had me against the front door before I'd finished the word.

We didn't make it to the bedroom for a while.

We made it as far as the stairs.

He pushed my coat off my shoulders, and his mouth found my neck.

I sat down on the fourth step with my back against the wall and pulled him down over me.

"Upstairs," he said into my throat.

"You're slow."

"I'm going to be slower."

He lifted me and carried me up, and this time he didn't hurry.

In the bedroom he put me on my feet in front of the window.
