Chapter 9: Three Years of Letters

I didn't need the elders to tell me where she'd gone.

Vanilla.

My new nose picked it up at the kitchen door, thin and sweet, and followed it down the slope behind the lodge to the lake.

Ewan walked beside me with his burned wrists wrapped in kitchen towels and didn't ask why I was going so fast.

The old boathouse leaned at the end of a rotting dock.

When we were nine, Carys and I had hidden in the loft there with a flashlight and a bag of gummy bears and promised to be best friends until we died.

A light was on in the loft now.

I went up the ladder first.

She sat on a stack of life jackets with her tote bag at her feet, in the coat she had worn this morning, with her knees pulled up.

She had been crying for hours, and her eyes were swollen.

She looked up and didn't even try to smile.

"You found me," Carys said. "Of course you did. You've got your wolf."

"Where's the bottle?"

She reached into the bag and took out the amber bottle with the spoon rattling inside and set it on the floor between us.

Ewan crouched, unscrewed the cap and sniffed.

His face changed.

"Wolfsbane," he said. "Enough to stop an old man's heart in one dose."

"It was supposed to make him sleep," Carys said. "Rafe said it would only make him sleep through the Bowl. That's all."

"He nearly died!"

"I know." Her voice broke. "I know, I saw. I stood at the foot of his bed and watched you try to hold him together, and that was when I knew Rafe had lied to me."
